39,000 Feet

Yesterday evening as I was flying from Orlando to Buffalo I saw this amazing sunset that covered the entire western horizon. The colors we so vivid and separated into a horizontal rainbow. Red at the bottom then orange, yellow, green and blue.

I took this picture out the window but it really doesn’t do it justice. So I wonder why were the colors separated like that?

How Science Really Works

A simulated fossil dig, a video about a 4 winged dinosaur, a search for more information about the process of science and where does it get you? Well maybe a little bit closer to how science really works.

Scientific investigation isn’t like the lab experiments you do in school. Those help you to better understand how controlled experiments are used to test a hypothesis, but not how science really works. To get a better understanding click on the image below.

Fossil Find

How strange is this? I was checking my email tonight and found this from Nova. I linked the picture to the Nova site (click on the picture) where you can watch the program online. See how these real paleontologists debate their findings and reach very different conclusions on what this animal looked like. Sound familiar?

SPF Investigation

Future scientists at work! I wonder if that is true.

So what did you learn by doing this? What was the purpose of this experiment and why do you have to complete the formal write-up? Did this answer your key question? Was this all about determining if higher SPF levels block or absorb more UV rays? Did it create more questions than it answered?

I’ve heard that some of you are struggling with making a graph. Use software to help you like Create-A-Graph; scientists don’t do graphs by hand they use computers! Here’s a simple graph I created:
