Write Your Weather Report

Using the weather map from the board in class (shown below), your textbook and notes, write a weather report for each box A-E. Assume the map represents  late spring weather. In your report consider:

  • General weather based on the pressure system in each box
  • Specific conditions related to fronts: cloud types and precipitation, location relative to fronts, ahead of fronts, behind fronts, temperature changes, consider location and elevation
  • Special situations based on location or other factors
  • Daytime heating

Sea Breeze Storms

The National Weather Service issued a severe storm alert for Central Orange County this afternoon. High winds and quarter sized hail were reported.  Below is a radar loop showing the short lived storm (click on the image to see animation). We are still early in the year for these types of storms but today’s high temperature (96 degrees) provided sufficient energy.

Biggest Solar Flare in 4 Years

Watch for the aurora borealis in the night sky tonightParticles from a massive solar flare Monday are en route to earth, and they may have interesting effects in our own atmosphere. When charged emissions from solar flares encounter atoms in Earth’s ionosphere, they stimulate the phenomenon we know as the aurora borealis or “northern lights”. Usually seen in extreme northern parts of the US and Canada, this flare might result in auroras being seen as far south as Washington DC.

39,000 Feet

Yesterday evening as I was flying from Orlando to Buffalo I saw this amazing sunset that covered the entire western horizon. The colors we so vivid and separated into a horizontal rainbow. Red at the bottom then orange, yellow, green and blue.

I took this picture out the window but it really doesn’t do it justice. So I wonder why were the colors separated like that?

National Weather Service Issues Fire Warnings

Students are not the only ones wanting a tropical storm to visit Florida. While students are looking for a hurricane day so they can stay home from school, firefighters are concerned that the lack of rain and current dry weather is increasing the risk of brush and forest fires.

The National Weather Service has issued Red Flag Warnings and Fire Weather Watches for much of Florida. The lack of tropical storms reaching Florida this year has resulted in drought conditions. Add to that our current low humidity levels and fires can start and spread very easily.
