I wonder …

“I wonder …..” you fill in the rest.

That’s the theme for science this year. Somehow I hope to rekindle the child-like wonder and amazement at the world which surrounds us. Throughout the year I’ll encourage you to wonder — “I wonder why this happens” “I wonder how this works” “I wonder what would happen if”. Then we’ll build the skills to answer those questions.

As I’m writing this and finishing up a re-design of the class website, I wonder what our first week will be like. Currently tropical storm Fay is off the coast of Cuba and computer models predict its path to include Central Florida. Right now classes on Tuesday and Wednesday are questionable. So if there is no school does the learning stop?

  • I wonder if tropical storm Fay will turn into a hurricane.
  • I wonder what affects the paths of storms.
  • I wonder how computers predict the path.
  • I wonder what causes storms to strengthen.
  • I wonder what you wonder.

  1. I still wonder a lot about hurricanes, but I’m not wondering about class tomorrow — its been cancelled. We’ll see what happens tomorrow but I might guess that we’ll not have class Wednesday either. It depends on the storm’s strength and movement.

Thank you all for a great first day of school (I mean that) and I look forward to a great year.

  2. Fay seems to be the storm that never quits! I just received a call stating that schools will be closed tomorrow (Friday) so we’ll have a long weekend. To make up for the 2 days off you’ll now have school on October 17th and 24th.

  3. What path do you think Ike will take? When do you think all this water from fay will go away? What do you think happened to little Caylee Anothany?
What do you think is going to happen with the election?

These are all things that every teenager who has seen the news is mostlikely thinking about!
    Do you think thats fair?

I don’t! Altho i don’t mind keeping up with the things goingon in the world.
    What do you think?

  10. I wonder how we are going to answer all these questions?

Maybe you could do some investigations on your own and post some answers here.

You could even earn some credit for it.

  11. Well I think we all know what happen to Caylee Anothony, Emily.
Where do we do I wonders about earthquakes and volcanoes? (:

  12. paulina 7th>>>>>>>>>>>

well there is probably alot of things that cause water currents like the wind or movement in the water stuff like that!!:Dlol

    • I believe we studied ocean currents, both surface and deep. Can anyone remember that far back? There’s also plenty of resources on this site to answer your question.

  13. Ocean Currents ,(SurfaceCirculation upper 400 meters of the ocean).
,(Thermohaline Circulation density difference is a function of different temperatures and salinity)

  14. ok the other day i was watching the science channel(i think?) and it was on super humans . It was saying how people could endure frezzing temps. and the scientist were saying how they r trying to gentically make people like that. i wonder if that could actually have a negative affect on a person !
