Well, in this picture, it looks like they hang out in a room with a bunch of equipment
, drink coffee and talk. But on closer investigation students are getting an introduction to the Pacific Northwest Seismograph Network, an earthquake monitoring facility at the University of Washington. Click on the picture to take a tour of the facility and learn more about earthquakes.
Earthquake
s happen all around the world, much more frequently than most people imagine. But because Earthquakes vary in strength (what we call magnitude) with most doing little to no damage, we tend not to pay much attention. Just to be on the safe side click here to see where the most recent earthquakes are occurring.

i liked when we learned about how subducting made volcanoes.
wesley
i learned that more then one earthquake happens everyday!!!
hey Mr.Grant i learned that volcanos accure closest to the boundries of faults and lots of other stuff.
i never new that the first of the earthquake zones is the Cascadia Subduction zone, i learn something new but why so many zones?? yup
the test today was hard today
joseph figueroa
from you 5th pri class..=)
I learned that eathquakes is very strong and it has done alot of damage.Theres also more to come.

Do you think any earthquakes will happen here. or are we to far from the fault line, james

Just a comment on “the first of the earthquake zones is the Cascadia Subduction zone”.
What they mean is simply it’s the first of 3 zones they are going to discuss. There is no real oder to the zones.
James, good question. I did a google search on “Florida earthquakes” and found we’ve had a few but they were small and not much damage. As far as earthquakes go, Florida is a pretty safe place.
Redsox is that a fashion statement or a Boston thing?
i worder do there data tell them what is the earth doing now.
mariah brown
I Learned That The Second Zone That Earthquakes Can Occur In Is The Deep Benioff Zone.
Amanda
is there ever any mistake in the data that they collated.

When the rock can no longer take the stress of being pushed and pulled, it breaks creating a fault along which earthquakes can occur.
-Rene-
do they tell ther data to the other teachers

Mariah,
They monitor what the ground is doing 24 hrs a day, 365 days a year. Using about 200 seismographs located throughout the NW.
Some of there instruments are so sensitive they can detect some one walking past the equipment.

i learn in class that earthquake occur around plate boundaries
mariah brown
Nekea,
One of the important things about science is that they share information. The site you went to is one of the ways that facility shares information. More technical data is also available from them.
Mariah,
Yes there is always the chance of errors in the data, a piece of equipment could malfunction or some other problem occurs.
When we do experiments we want to do multiple trials to look for errors. Scientists repeat other scientists experiments to be sure they get the same results. Only after doing these things can we be confident our results are correct.
In this situation they have about 200 seismographs and they compare the readings from many sources. That way they can be confident in their results.
Hey Mr. Grant. I hought it was interesting how earthquakes can happen towards the center of continents too, not just around them.
Okay i learned that the first of the earthquakes are in the cascadia zone.actuly at first i dint get it at all but me and my brother joseph askd are dad and he explained it so its all good haha…o i asldo learned that valconas happen realy close to faults and boundres
well yea byez:]
Aniella Barreto from your 3rd period
HEYYYYYYYYYYYYYY IT WAS REAL GREAT IN CLASS TODAY LEARNING A LIL MORE BOUT PLATE BOUNDRIES
SHAVEN
i learned that more than one earthquake happens everyday!!!!!!!
i learned that seattle has a lot of earthquake zones
michael michalko
i learned that the seattle area is a subduction zone
amira 3rd pd
earthquakes are extreme forces of nature and are very dangerous and hard to predict
I leared that the s-waves can only go up to 100 degrees but the p-wave can go only up to 140 degrees. That was some stuff I learnd in you class but also on the website too. Thanks so much for providing these resouces. They really help.

(1st period)
I learned how earth quakes are caused
Can you believe what earthquakes can do
lol
Helicorders are one of the ways we look at earthquakes and other seismic events. Information from our seismographs is sent back to the seismology lab and the signal is transfered onto paper.
Rossana velasquez
*Mr.Grant i learned that the PNSN helps scientist alot trying to gather data from the earthquakes that occur in the Pacific Northwest*
***Carolina Zuluaga***
I learned that Seismographs pick up many different
events, earthquakes,it can pick up when a rock falls, rock quarry blasts, a person’s footsteps, and various forms of interference.
-Rene’-
i learned that more than one earthquake happens everyday all around the world!!!
Samantha Ledford
4th period class.
I learned that there are 3 fault lines near the Seattle area.
David Walsh in your first period
hey wat up mr.grant i learned that earthquakes occur more in california tah any other state in the us and that the islands of hawaii are made of underwater volcanoes cased by the movement of the plated
FRANCISCO,FIGUEROA 3RD PERIOD
I learned that the Cascadia Subduction zone produces some of the biggest earthquakes and that the fault line is over 1,000 miles long and can produce up to a 9.0 magnitude earthquake. I also think it’s really cool how PNSN are so helpful when it comes to teaching people about earthquake awareness. It’s nice to know there are a gruop of people who are looking out for your safety.

FRANCISCO,FIGUEROA
hello mister grant
i learned that earth quakes can be very strong and very small.they are also cause when the earths plates rub or push togher i think there called convergent boundaries or maybe it was divergent.
p.s i also learned i need to pay attention in class more
see ya later
i learned that they have a lot moe than one seismograph stations in one state
After reading all of this information, one of the things i learned today was that the shallow or crustal earthquakes are the most damaging to the areas of the Puget Sound due to the movement that occurs at the surface of the earth right under the people.
-Cristal Ortiz (1st period) =P
well i learned alot of things actualy today on your website..but what really interested me was the earthquake movements and fault boundaries.non the less, learned alot about the zones..:D
Aryba Qazi..
1st period..
we are learning oh so much in our science class. We learned in a recent study that there are waves by the name of seismc waves. There are even transverse and compression waves. This stuff does get confusing at one point but iz all gud dawg. im out. dis ya girl morgan i stay fresh. Im out so yea. First period da best we oh soooo fresh.
im out fo real now cheaaaaaaaaaaaa!
Dear Mr. Grant Your class is amazing
I adore you!
I waited yesterday for you but i was in the library. I think i will come after school today so you can teach me new science related things.
<33 Your Fanatic!
well i learned alot of things actualy today on your website..but what really interested me was the earthquake movements and fault boundaries.non the less, learned alot about the zones and stuff.and that alll these “disturbances”
occur along the bounderies of each plate.

IN UR 3RD PER:)
Dear, Mr. Grant
i learned that the PNSN helps the scientist tell or guess a observation where earth is currently doing
$$ Ariel Loyd$$
hey mr.grant! the article was very interesting. i learned that earthquakes form around the continents and also in the center of continents.
Nadia Khan
from ur 3rd period
It’s nice to see all of you posting here. Now the big question is will you keep doing it when I don’t assign it as homework?
