    A solution is a special type of mixture where one substance dissolves another. The substances are not chemically combined. A solution can be broken down by physical means.

    A compound is a substance (sometimes called a pure substance) made up of 2 or more elements chemically combined. A compound can not be broken down by physical means, but can be broken down by chemical means.
